The superstitions or voodoo plays a profound role in the lives of many Haitians. The voodoo was introduced into Haiti in the late 16th Century. Haiti is also famous for its painting, and finally for its ruins...for example the Sans Souci Palace, the most famous ruins in the Caribbean. Exactly, this enigmatic palace is considered a Cultural Heritage for Humanity by UNESCO. Originally constructed by black slaves, now Sans Souci is one of Haiti's main tourist attractions.

Since the late 1940s, Haitian painting, best known as "naïve art" or "intuitive art", is famous all around the World. The most important figure was Hector Hyppolite. His work made its biggest splash in the United States in the 20th Century. Other artists known internationally include Rigaud Benoit, Castera Bazile, Joseph Jean-Giles and Jean-Baptista Bottlex.Haiti is famous for its traditional sculpture. Since 1997, Wyclef Jean, as soloist, became well-known on the international music scene. In 1975, many Haitian people were shocked to open their newspapers and see photographs of Gerthie David Miss Haiti in El Salvador. On the night of July 19th 1975, in San Salvador, Gerthie David, Miss Haiti, was the second black woman to first runner-up in the history of Miss Universe Pageant. After winning the Miss Haiti title, Gerthie went to San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, to enter the Miss Universe Contest. The competence was exhausting, very hard, for example Miss Bolivia, Jackeline Gammarra, great favorite, was eliminated. This day, Miss Haiti looks like a black goddess. Her exotic beauty and charming personality are amazing! At 1,72m in height, she was the best in the evening gown competition, but her speech about the Haitian superstitions swayed thousands of applauses in the 25th Edition of the Contest. Certainly, Miss Haiti captive to the judges Sarah Vaughan (American black singer), Maribel Arrieta (Miss El Salvador 1955 and First runner-up at Miss Universe 1955), Jean Claude Killy (French sportsmen) and Leon Uris(American writer ).

Next months, in London, Joelle Apollon, Miss Haiti-World, came in sixth place at Miss World 1975.After sixteen years, Marjorie Vincent, formerly Miss Illinois 1991,won the title of Miss America Pageant. The first Miss America to originate from the Caribbean. In other words, Marjorie Vincent has Haitian roots. Furthermore, she was the second black woman to win the pageant.

SPORTS

Like in Brazil or Italy, the football is the most popular sport in Haiti. Certainly, the national pastime is the football. A different of the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico, the Haitian people don't like the baseball. In the 20th Century, football became the most popular sport in the Island, thanks to such heroes as Sylvio Cator, Joseph Gaetjens and Emmanuel Sanon. In 1974 Haiti qualified for the World Cup in Germany.

Emmanuel Sanon was one of the Haiti's most popular players and played at the 1974 World Cup. Sanon made a great contribution to Haitian football because he played in more World Cup qualifiers any other Haitian. He is still very popular with local fans. Other phenomenal talent was Joseph Eduard Gaetjens. He represented both Haiti and the United States. He made FIFA World Cup History: When scored United States opening goal in the 1950 World Cup against England. Joseph came to the United States in the 1940s to play in the American Soccer League. His beautiful play in the Brookhattan Club made in a national star. In 1953, he played for Haiti for the first time.

It's practically impossible to talk about Haitian athletes without mentioning Sylvio Cator. He is a legend in this sport. Cator won the silver medal in the long jump at 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Cator returned home to a hero's welcome. From 1928 to 1930, he was record man in the long jump. Cator was a marvelous jumper and footballer. He also played an important role in popularizing football in the Island (it was the captain of Haitian National Team).

Since then, he is an example for young people in Haiti. He died in November 1938, but today the people of Haiti still think of him with respect. Many years after Cator's death, the National Stadium in Por-au-Prince was renamed in his honor. Cator was the first of the great Caribbean sportsmen that would come to dominate world track and field.

He became the first Haitian to Olympic finalist since Yves Jeudy (boxer) in 1976. He won the silver medal at the 1994 World Junior Championship, the bronze at the 2001 World Chanpionship and the gold medal at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games El Salvador. Dorival is one of the best sportsman in the history of Haiti.

Is it possible for sophisticated travelers to really enjoy themselves in the land of Mickey Mouse? Absolutely! Walt Disney World has undergone a transformation much like that of Las Vegas, with an abundance of fantastic themed resorts and sumptuous dining choices.

Maybe your image of Disney is of lackluster, motel-style accommodations. Not so! All deluxe property choices are unique and offer that special Disney touch. You'll find them to be adorned with impressive lobbies, painstakingly landscaped grounds, first-rate restaurants, elaborately themed pools, and gracious accommodations. All offer top-notch recreational facilities and services. In fact, each resort is so marvelous it can be difficult to choose which fantasy you wish to indulge.

Let me tell you about my favorites:

o Disney's flagship resort, The Grand Floridian, with its red-gabled roofs and Victorian elegance, draws inspiration from the grand Florida seaside "palace hotels" of 19th-century America's Gilded Age. Just a short monorail ride to the Magic Kingdom, it spreads along the shore of the Seven Seas Lagoon with spectacular views of Cinderella's Castle and the Wishes fireworks display. Aquatic enticements include a crescent white sand beach dotted with brightly striped, canopied lounge chairs, a large sophisticated pool in the central courtyard, a new beachside Florida springs-style pool, and a classy marina sporting a wide assortment of watercraft. A full service health club and spa, tennis courts, five restaurants, two lounges, and sophisticated shopping round out the list of exceptional offerings.

o A navy blue blazer should be in order for a stay at Disney's Yacht Club where guests find the sophisticated ambience of a posh Eastern seaboard hotel of the 1880s. Fronting Crescent Lake and a sliver of beach that stretches over to the adjoining Beach Club Resort, it's just a short stroll to Epcot's International Gateway entrance and only a boat ride away to Disney-MGM Studios. Best of all is the Yacht Club's 3-acre mini-water park complex, Stormalong Bay, offering sandy bottom pools, a giant "shipwreck" waterslide, a tidal whirlpool, bubbling hot tubs, a kiddie pool with its own slide next to the beach, and enough length to float lazily in inner tubes to your heart's content.

o The Animal Kingdom Lodge is a stunning celebration of African wildlife, culture, cuisine, and art. Its authentic architecture and 33 acres of grasslands filled with hundreds of roaming, exotic animals is simply a stroke of genius. The six-story, horseshoe-shaped structure is surrounded by a landscape of golden boulders, tall bamboo, yellow flame trees, pampas grass, copperpod trees, and date palms. In it's imposing, 5-story, thatched roof lobby are massive chandeliers formed by resplendent Masai shields, a large mud fireplace, and handsome safari-chic seating. From common lookouts as well as from 90% of the guestrooms are wonderful views of playful zebra, lanky giraffe, sprite gazelle, huge ankole cattle, herds of wildebeest, flocks of exotic birds, and more, with over 200 animals in all.

o Last but not least is The Wilderness Lodge, Disney's dramatic depiction of an early 1900s national park resort. I challenge you to keep your jaw from dropping open on your first encounter with its awesome eight-story lobby of ponderosa pine logs, a massive 82-foot tall fireplace, and authentic 55-foot Pacific Northwest totem poles. Outside is a breathtaking scene of sparkling waterfalls, rushing creeks, and towering pines. The sound of crickets is heard beneath the bridges and along the meandering pathways lined with natural grasses, junipers, and wildflowers. And on the shores of Bay Lake is Wilderness Lodge's very own erupting geyser surrounded by a steaming expanse of geothermal activity.

What about Disney's dining choices? Once just a hot dog and hamburger haven, Disney's reputation for dreadful theme park food is now a thing of the past. Think Pan Roasted Striped Bass with Aromatic Rock Shrimp Lemongrass Risotto, 6-Hour Braised Veal Shank with Orzo Pasta and Soy Glaze, or Cornbread Stuffed Quail with Foie Gras and Sauce Maltaise. Just a mere sampling of the incredible meals to be found at many of the over 270 dining spots on Disney property. In a radical culinary transformation Disney hired top-notch chefs to create exciting menus for some of the highest rated restaurants in the country and first-rate sommeliers to fashion outstanding wine lists.

o The California Grill on the 15th floor of Disney's Contemporary Resort offers an unbeatable panorama of the Magic Kingdom and the Seven Seas Lagoon along with picture-perfect views of the Wishes fireworks. From pristinely fresh sushi to exceptional New American Cuisine to sensational desserts and an outstanding California wine list, this place has it all. Don't be discouraged if all the coveted window seats are taken; an adjoining observation platform offers a bird's-eye view of the fireworks extravaganza.

o For top-notch and innovative seafood specialties, head to the Flying Fish at Disney's Boardwalk where entrees such as Potato Wrapped Florida Red Snapper with a Creamy Leek Fondue are the norm. area as opposed to the south in cold areas. In general,
a rule of thumb and this one is general and found right to
many locations around the world, as strange as it may sound,
the northern neighborhoods are usually more desirable than
the southern ones exactly as the western ones are more
prestigious than the eastern ones.

- The size of the lot, its shape and the square footage of the
house itself. If the majority of buyers in your area are
young families with children, consider a house with a large
yard that's not fronted by a busy street.

- There are many other environmental aspects to consider with
respect to personal preference like a green agricultural area
vs. urban area, quality of schools and other social services
and facilities.

In addition to these external considerations there are many important internal elements that can make a house quality higher and buyers are always looking for, such as:

- Closets, lots of closets and with as much additional storage
space as possible.

- Light and bright - Homes with lots of natural lighting are
very popular.

- Split bedroom plans, with bedrooms on each end of the home,
are increasingly popular with buyers.

- If you live in a scenic area, having a view can help you sell.

- Plenty of bedrooms, baths and Rest rooms.

- Large and convenient kitchen with as many cabinets and
cooking space as possible.

- The tendency to work from home calls for a suitable room to
be set as a home office.

- Laundry and dryer machines located at the same level as the
bad rooms.

- A spacious basement is a plus.

Features to avoid

- One bath homes sell for significantly less than homes with at
least two baths and they take longer to sell.

- Electric baseboard heat and electric ceiling heat are not as
desirable as central heating systems. A fireplace in the
living room is a plus.

- Tubs and showers in outdated colors, or scratched from years
of improper cleaning, might be hard to change without ripping
out doors or walls.

- Popcorn ceilings date a house, you know, those bumpy ceilings
that were so popular in the 1970's.

Your first objective is to buy a home that's right for you, but do consider its resale value before you make the final decision, especially if you know you'll move again within three to five years. A careful purchase now will help give you extra funds to move up with the next time you buy a home.

Home Inspections

Depending on the type of financing you choose, there should be either 2 or 3 separate inspections on the home you want to purchase.

The first should be your own basic inspection (see the bottom of this page for what to look for), the second should be a professional whole-house inspection by a reputable person. Should you select a government loan (FHA or VA), the third inspection should come at the time of the appraisal, which to some degree amounts to a "mini-inspection." Do not, however, rely on this appraisal as your only inspection of the property!

We cannot emphasize enough the value and necessity of an extensive home inspection. Many home purchasers, either in the desire to save the 0 to 0 that a good inspection costs, or due to simple ignorance, have spent enormous sums of money repairing items that any good home inspector would have pointed out.

Any offer to purchase you make should be contingent upon (subject to) a whole house inspection with a satisfactory report. Do not let anyone not the agent, not your family or friends, and especially not the seller--dissuade you from having the property thoroughly inspected!

Not only will you sleep much sounder after you have moved into the house, a professional inspection can give you an escape hatch from a contract on a defective house. If the contract is written contingent on an acceptable inspection, any defects in the home must be either repaired or monetarily compensated for.
If you are not satisfied, you have the option to cancel the contract.

Are you looking for wholesale deals in Chicago South Side? With so many neighborhoods and areas to choose from, I know it can get quite tricky. For any investor looking to purchase real estate in Chicago's south side, the first thing they should know is the various pockets of neighborhoods. The reason most investors look towards the South Side of Chicago is because there is a large portion of middle to low income neighborhoods with great houses. The south side for consists areas like high-end Hyde Park (where Obama lives), quintessential blue-collar areas like Chattam, Burnside, Chicago heights, and lower end neighborhoods like Englewood and West Pullman.

When looking at Chicago's South Side, the best way to point an investor is to break it up into 4 areas. Below are short descriptions that will give you an idea for what to look for and where to start.

South East - If you drive down from Lake Shore Drive past downtown, you begin to hit very historical areas of Chicago. As soon as you pass McCormick Place you are in Bronzeville. After Bronzeville, you will quickly be in Hyde Park. These two areas are historical and well kept condos and single family homes sell for 300K and up. You may find a multi unit for fewer than 100K, but that's very rare. Chicago University has is own campus and is lodged closely to the Hyde Park neighborhood, making it a very desirable area for young urban professionals. Unlike the North side, prices take a cliff dive in specific areas. If you go West of University of Chicaog, into Washington Park, you will find REO's in the low 40's. This area is was prime for change if Chicago won the Olympics, but we didn't. I would start looking farther South, past 55th, and into the 6800 South blocks.

If you keep going down Lake Shore Drive, you will hit South Shore and then South Chicago. South Shore is a beautiful area and you will find some of the cheapest lake side property in Chicago. There are pockets within South Shore, but the best real estate will be multi units. Last year saw some of the lowest prices for 3-4 unit buildings in South Shore. Although purchasing a property for 50-60K is ideal for investors, every building should undergo a full rehab. Section 8 loves these areas and properties will cash flow, ,200 for a 3 bedroom all day.

If you pass 85th, you're in South Chicago. The character of South Chicago is a lot different than South Shore; you have a lot more frame single family houses and a lot of board ups. This is not all that bad when you consider that you can get the same amount of rent for these properties. If you are looking for a buy, fix, and flip, I suggest you stick with brick single family homes for no more than 50-60K. But, if you find a brick multi-unit property, take advantage of it. I have seen prices for multi units a tad bit over single family homes, so don't think the prices are that much higher.

Basically, you want single family brick homes under 50K east of the Dan Ryan. If you are looking to buy multi-unit property in Chicago's South Side, just make sure you calculate your repairs high because the cheaper they are, the worse condition they may be in.
